UAW-Chrysler
National Training Center
2211 East Jefferson Avenue - Detroit, Michigan |
The UAW-Chrysler
National Training Center (NTC) oversees more than 30 joint
programs that provide education, training and support services
for UAW-represented workers at Chrysler LLC. Since
its founding in 1985, the NTC has pioneered efforts
to create a world-class workforce through union-management
cooperation and a commitment to lifelong learning.
The National
Training Center has four regional training facilities in
Missouri and Delaware. They supplement
NTC-supported training programs at Chrysler LLC locations
across the United States. In addition, the NTC operates
the UAW-Chrysler Technology Training Center in Warren,
Mich.. The 135,000-square-foot facility is a showcase for
training a new generation of skilled-trades workers, as
well as helping journeymen keep pace with changing technology.
The center offers training in robotics, computer-aided
design and other innovative manufacturing techniques.
Using
the latest technology, other joint programs run the gamut
of continuing education available to hourly
and salaried United Auto Workers members. They range from
basic academic skills refresher courses to college tuition
assistance for workers, dependent children and UAW retirees.
The NTC is seeking to broaden access to educational opportunities
through LearnNTC.com, an on-line training initiative.
Other
programs provide a social safety net for UAW members and
their families. They include confidential referrals to
help workers resolve personal problems and assistance in
finding reliable care for children and elderly dependents.
Artists at Work, an annual art exhibition, recognizes the
creativity of UAW and non-bargaining unit Chrysler employees
in the United States.
Created
in 1985 contract negotiations, the National Training Center
is funded under a formula pegged to hours worked in Chrysler's
U.S. plants. The NTC is governed by a Joint
Activities Board composed of union and management representatives.
The co-chairmen are General Holiefield, vice president
and director, Chrysler Department, UAW, and John S. Franciosi,
senior vice president, employee relations, Chrysler LLC.
